What is domestic violence?

Domestic violence is displayed in many forms, where abusive partners use different tactics to dominate their significant others. No matter the background, anyone can be affected by or cause domestic violence. It brings about feelings of fear, guilt, and isolation and can crush one's self-esteem.

The crisis touches lives not only in Louisiana but across the United States, where alarming numbers report experiencing domestic violence or sexual assault.

Recognizing domestic violence means understanding its various forms, including:

Physical Abuse

Hitting, biting, or choking you, stopping you from leaving, eating, or getting help, and forcing drug or alcohol use.

Emotional & Verbal Abuse

Insulting, controlling your actions, cutting you off from loved ones, and making threats.

Sexual Abuse & Coercion

Forcing sexual acts, harm during sex without consent, and pressuring you sexually for favors.

Reproductive Coercion

Sabotaging birth control or pressuring pregnancy.

Financial Abuse

Blocking access to money, stealing, controlling spending, or withholding funds for essentials.

Digital Abuse

Unwanted explicit messages, demanding passwords, or excessive contact through digital means.

Stalking

Persistent messages, unexpected visits, or online tracking.
